Living among Speakers within a Supreme “Music Architecture”

What elements should you consider when building a house? Typically, people say they want a “comfortable home” with amenities that make family life easier. But what if you’re a singleton? How about building a house that fully encompasses all your personal interests and desires? In the suburbs of Tokyo is a house that represents just such a personal vision.

The best sound isn’t in the living room, but in the DJ Booth

After turning forty, an IT Developer we’ll call “K” decided to build his own house. “K” is single, loves music, and loves to DJ - “I want to build a house where I can listen to great music with the best sound quality.” He entrusted his vision to architect Shinsuke Tsuruta who utilized the same high-quality Taguchi flat speakers found in Tokyo’s famed Blue Note jazz bar to design a living space that is “dripping with sound.”

From the outside, K’s house upon a hill even resembles a speaker. It’s a two-floor, three bedroom detached home. On the first floor is a bedroom and small utility room, along with a large open-plan living room, dining room, and kitchen. The second floor contains a beautiful washroom and lavatory, but is truly distinguished by its custom “DJ Booth.”

Even after completion, K is determined to maintain a minimalist décor, eschewing even a bed or dining table. He wakes up every morning in a futon he places directly under the DJ Booth to catch the best sound.
We asked Tsuruta-san about the design of this edgy structure:

“We calculated an arc stretching from the horizon of the curved wall, and we placed the DJ Booth in the center of that arc. The face of the wall isn’t spherical; it’s a unique semi-elliptical shape. Normally, the sound waves from the speakers would meet the sound waves reverberating from the opposite wall and cause the acoustics to sound flat. However, the DJ Booth is located perfectly to diffuse those opposing streams and ensure a lush acoustics. Even the sound from behind the speakers is gathered and projected through the entire space. Tall windows along the wall reveal the expansive scenery around the house, but even the windows are installed at a slight angle to provide the necessary asymmetry for perfect acoustics”

In contrast to dance clubs designed to project the best sound onto the dance floor, this structure is designed to ensure that the sweetest sound is found while listening in the DJ Booth.

Tsuruta-san’s “Music Architecture” Creates a Living Space “Dripping with Sound”

Tsuruta-san named this house the “KATAOKA GALAXY,” with the DJ Booth symbolizing the cockpit of a spaceship. The DJ is the captain who charts a trip atop the waves of sound. This structure, made specifically for the enjoyment of music, represents Tsuruta-san’s eighth design of “Music Architecture.”

“From my perspective, when you think about people paying big money to incorporate the latest video equipment into their homes, it is absurd to not be a stickler about acoustics as well. Some think it’s OK just to build a soundproof room containing an audio system, but I don’t. The entire living space should be “dripping” with high-quality sound. With today’s technology, you can design a structure that accounts for acoustic oscillation and reverberation, and place the perfect speakers in the correct position. Even at a low volume, you can enjoy a lush, high-definition sound throughout your space. I hope that more audiophiles will realize what’s possible with Music Architecture.”

To put it simply, the definition of a “comfortable home” differs between different people. The most important thing is to enjoy your life. “K,” awaking every morning under his DJ Booth, has undoubtedly figured out how to enjoy life to the fullest.
