彼らなくしてザ・フーの成功なし! 映画「ランバート・アンド・スタンプ」 The story behind the sex, drugs, rock ‘n roll: Lambert and Stamp

Regardless of whether you’re a fan of rock ’n roll, you’re bound to have heard of the band ‘The Who’. The ultimate symbols of British mods culture, The Who have been influencing musicians from all different spheres for over fifty years now. With such immense success, you can’t help but wonder what was going on behind the scenes. Now their managers have come forward in a fascinating new documentary drama ‘Lambert and Stamp’ to spill the beans on the swinging sixties with the notorious band.

The movie starts as two aspiring film directors, Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp set out to produce a documentary on underground London in order to propel themselves to fame. It sounds like every young aspiring artist’s story, but here’s when the tale takes a sharp change in direction with a miracle encounter. The pair come across a band called the High Numbers, who they consequently decide to mentor, scrapping their plans for the documentary to instead manage the group. This band is what will become The Who as they are known today.

Using real live performance footage, interspersed with the managers’ interviews and juicy gossip, it’s a legitimate dive into behind-the-scenes happenings and a thoroughly interesting piece of cinema. The slices of reality including money problems, fights and consequent reconciliations keep the film down to earth and fresh.

Nowadays thanks to social media, the amount of self-produced net-celebs is on the rise. But it makes you wonder: how many of the big Youtubers are going to remain in the mainstream ten, twenty years from now? Sure, trends rise, but there’s almost always certainly a downfall too. However if you’ve got people around you to believe in you and support your every move, there’s no doubt about it. ‘Lambert and Stamp’ shows the talent, strength and judgment of the figures behind the scenes, and the power of believing.
